Why Store Cord Blood?

Cord blood banking involves collecting and storing blood from the placenta and umbilical cord after delivery. This valuable blood contains stem cells, which can be used to treat certain diseases that require stem cell transplants, such as lymphoma, or leukemia, sickle cell anemia, aplastic anemia, and even diabetes. By storing your child’s cord blood, the stem cells can be used to treat your child, a sibling or even you, if you are diagnosed with a condition or disease that requires a stem cell transplant.

Cord Blood Banking Knowledge

Expecting parents often don’t know what cord blood banking involves, how it works, and what type of cord blood banking costs can be expected in terms of initial and annual fees. Our staff is here to help educate you on the entire process, so you can determine whether or not cord blood banking is right for your family.

How Cord Blood is Used

Stem Cell Therapy

In the past, the umbilical cord and the placenta were thrown away after the birth. But in the 1970s, researchers discovered that the umbilical cord could supply the same type of blood-forming stem cells as bone marrow.

So, what are blood-forming stem cells exactly?

Blood-forming cells are able to develop into three different types of mature cells found in the blood: platelets, white blood cells, and red blood cells. Stem cells from cord blood also have the ability to give rise to other types of cells in the body.

Certain types of illnesses require chemotherapy and radiation treatments in order to kill cancerous cells in the body. While these treatments are often successful at killing the cancerous cells, they also end up killing off healthy cells as well. When this occurs, a patient will benefit from receiving a cord blood stem cell transplant using either their own stem cells or cells from a donor whose cells are a close match. The stem cells used from donors are transplanted into the patient and work to make new healthy cells, boosting the patient’s immune system and blood producing capability.

Your child’s cord blood can be used by other members of the family as well, including both parents, siblings, and in some cases, extended family. If another family member is in need of a cord blood stem cell transplant, we’ll coordinate with the testing facility in order to determine if the stem cells are a match.

Stem Cells and Diabetes Treatment

One of the leading causes of death in America, diabetes is a disease that affects the body’s ability to use or produce insulin. While the cause of diabetes is still unknown, clinical studies are underway to determine if stem cell treatment can be used to effectively treat patients with both type one and type two diabetes. While research is still ongoing, scientists are confident that they’re close to a solution.

The Cord Blood Banking Process

Medical Treatments

Women who decide to have their child’s cord blood banked must fill out the appropriate paperwork and sign up for service during their third trimester of pregnancy. Once the mother is signed up, she’ll receive a collection kit, which she will take with her to the hospital when it’s time to deliver.

The collection process is fairly simple. Your doctor will cut the infant’s umbilical cord and obtain the umbilical cord blood from both the cut portion of the umbilical cord and the placenta. This is done using either a bag catch method or by extracting the blood using a syringe.

Because the cord has already been cut, this is a totally pain-free process for both the mother and infant.

This process must take place immediately after the birth in order to ensure the viability of the stem cells. The blood is placed in a storage container with anticoagulants that prevent the blood from clotting.

This procedure can be done for both C-section births and vaginal births.

After the cord blood is collected, hospital staff will draw your blood, placing it in our testing tubes which will be sent to our lab at the same time as the cord blood. Your blood will be tested for infectious diseases as the cord blood is processed.

Cord Blood Kit

The cord blood kit is specifically designed to preserve cord blood. Our kits meet all American Association of Blood Banks and FDA validation requirements.

You’ll receive this kit once the sign-up process is completed. The kit should be stored at room temperature, away from bright sunlight. When it’s time to deliver, you’ll take the kit with you to the hospital and give it to your medical team to use immediately after delivery.

In the kit, you’ll find:

  • Sterile collection bag: This bag is contained in a sealed, sterile foil package and is used to collect the blood from the umbilical cord.
  • Blood test tubes: These are red and purple-topped test tubes and they will be used to collect blood from the mother which will be tested for infectious diseases.
  • Antiseptic swabs: The swabs will be used to disinfect the collection area on the cut umbilical cord before the blood is collected.
  • Biohazard bag: This bag will contain the collected cord blood after it has been placed in the appropriate container. The cord blood does not go directly into the biohazard bag.
  • Paperwork: This paperwork includes your medical documents, collection instructions, and your contract with our facility. It should be given to your medical team at the hospital.

Once your doctor has completed the procedure, your child’s cord blood will be ready for transport.

Medical Courier Services

Our facility has medical couriers available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Once the blood has been obtained, you’ll contact our facility immediately. A courier will be sent straight to your hospital room to pick up the package and will immediately return to our lab to have the blood processed and stored.

Storing Cord Blood

Once the blood arrives at our lab, the sample is given a unique identifying number. Within twenty-four hours of collection, the blood will go through an extensive process designed to remove plasma and red blood cells, in order to extract pure stem cells. Once the blood is ready, it’s carefully brought down to freezing temperatures. This process must be completed within thirty-six hours of collection.

If You Need to Access Your Child’s Stem Cells

In the event you need to access your child’s stem cell sample, the stem cells will be thawed using a slow thawing process that ensures stem cell viability.

Should your doctor recommend a stem cell transplant for your child or another family member, our staff will work closely with your physician and other medical staff to ensure the cord blood is thawed and transported to the appropriate medical facility as soon as possible.

We pride ourselves on our fast, efficient service, and know how important it is for your child to receive treatment immediately.

Our medical coordinators will stay in contact with your physician after treatment in order to ensure no further cord blood samples are needed.

Client Testimonials

Cord Blood Banking Family

Our top priority is client satisfaction. Our highly trained staff will go above and beyond to educate our clients on how the stem cells from cord blood can be used for later treatment and what they can expect from the cord blood collection process, the type of processing methods we use, and how the cord blood is safely stored. Below is some recent feedback from past and present clients.

In the beginning, we were hesitant to store our daughter’s blood, but a family friend insisted that doing so would be a great way to protect our child for the future. We didn’t know that cord blood is currently being used to treat more than eighty types of diseases and conditions, or that the process was entirely pain-free. We were even surprised that the storage cost was so affordable. When we made an appointment for a consultation, the staff were so helpful, explaining how cord blood can be used and how it’s processed and stored. It was a real eyeopener for us. We signed up immediately. While Samantha hasn’t needed to use the cord blood, we’re still relieved that we decided to go ahead with the process, especially considering it can be used for treatment at any point during her life, not just during childhood.

We looked into storing our son’s cord blood when I was pregnant with Michael, but we just couldn’t afford the monthly payments. That was almost seven years ago. When I became pregnant with our second child, we decided to look into it again and were blown away by the lower prices this company offered. Since banking cord blood is more commonplace than it used to be we were able to afford it this time around. The monthly payments are very manageable and the initial sign up fees was actually something we could afford even though we were saving for the baby. The staff here is very friendly and helpful. I filled out their online email contact form and someone got back to me the same day. Even though we weren’t able to bank out first child’s cord blood, we can use Sara’s stored cord blood if she or Michael ever need a stem cell transplant. We’re really grateful we found this company.

Our daughter was diagnosed with a severe form of autism when she was three years old. There are many experimental treatments and clinical studies in the works in the autism research field that use stem cell therapy. We were so excited that we got accepted by one of the top programs. When I contacted the facility regarding using some of Bella’s cord blood they got back to me the same day and made arrangements to have her cord blood thawed and sent to the research center. I was so relieved that the process went smoothly, and we didn’t have to wait to get Bella started in the program. I couldn’t be happier with our experience banking here.
